pregnancy care

Pregnancy can be an incredibly powerful time in a women's life to start a family and bring life into the world. It can help teach you about all the amazing things that woman's body is capable of. With all these changes happening to all the systems of the body including the cardiovascular, hormonal, and musculoskeletal systems, we see a variety of different conditions present specifically with pregnancy including pelvic girdle pain, swelling of the hands and feet, rib pain, hip pain and other conditions associated with altered biomechanics.

An osteopath’s role during this period is to keep you up and moving and back to feeling your best. This may include a combination of hands-on treatment on the specific area, exercises to help rehabilitate musculoskeletal issues, lifestyle management advice or other management strategies to help manage or relieve symptoms.

Another area of Osteopathy in pregnancy can include birth preparation and education. For childbirth, your pelvic floor will need to distend significantly to allow the safe passage of a child through your pelvis. Assessment of pelvic floor distension, contraction, and the body’s ability to perform these in different positions can be incredibly helpful if planning to birth vaginally, especially if planning Vaginal Birth after Cesarian Section (VBAC).

We work in conjunction with other health professionals including general practitioners, physiotherapists, gynaecologists, and obstetricians to help ensure the best outcomes for you and your baby.
